everyone knows that a relax swing is basic in bowling.....
but whenever i have a relax swing my ball always hooked too early (even with a less aggressive ball) and if it does hit the pocket after adjustment the hitting power is like a 90 year old wet noodle...
so i tried to increase my ball speed, higher backswing compromising my relax swing..... it strikes perfect....however i beleive that a relax swing is essential for consistency...
any suggestions?

it is hard to analyze the problem based on the swing description. if you can, video tape yourself and have your game analyzed by a coach.

fyi, paeng nepomuceno doesn´t have a relaxed swing and he´s our greatest bowler.

i have to agree. it is really hard to picture unless you have someone taping you or you have an extra set of eyes....(a fellow bowler or a coach)

Try video taping it and save it as mpeg for all of us to see.

your approach to the foul line is not bad at all. you might need to push ball out forward a little more. but it is textbook and great for newbies to emulate.

Guys,

Hindi naman ako expert bowler, pero we all know that lower ball speed means more hook. My wife throws a 10 pound Maxim Ebonite at 2.85 seconds and she can hook it from a swing shot (inside/out line) on most lanes. If I throw my 13 pound Maxim Ebonite at around 2.4 to 2.5 seconds and with the same line/lane, pupunta sa no. 10 pin ang bola ko.

So, for the same ball, Pseudomonas must find a way to relax his swing and maintain the same ball speed. Maybe longer/faster steps combined with a lower backswing might help.

If he wants to maintain the relaxed swing and keep the lower ball speed, he needs a higher RG/low RG differential ball for longer skid. A low RG/high RG differential ball will skid less and need more speed on delivery. I read this from an article by Larry Mathews on the internet.

Hope this helps.

jorge, you need to move up to a 14lb or even 15 lb ball for better carry. 13 lb balls can still deflect upon impact with the pins.

changing your ball speed is a drastic adjustment. if you are not well practiced, it could ruin your timing. changing the height of the swing is a bad idea too. if you walk faster, there will be a chance that you will get off-balanced at the foul line.

the surface and material of the ball, not the rg or the differential, determines the skid.

To Black Cloud

Yes, I agree with the need for a heavier ball for better scores. Only thing wrong here is at my age, almost 52, I am having a hard time with the heavier balls. The 13 lb Storm Eraser Pearl Particle strikes fine, but does leave a no. 5 pin every so often. The Maxim is only for spares or if the lanes are super slow. The reason I used it is for comparison only to illustrate hook vs. speed, as my wife is still using the Maxim regularly while deciding on a suitable reactive ball to purchase.

I have an old Columbia White Dot - 14 lb - 4 oz and a Brunswick Tommy Hudson LT-51 - 15 lbs - 8 oz. They are not exactly what are needed for today´s lane conditions. I intend to use them only for wood lanes. Medyo mabigat na para sa akin, but I can still handle them for a short period of maybe three or four games.

You see, I do not compete and play for fun only. Twenty years ago I did play in a long term league, 5 man team, with a 165 average. The best I ever did short term in that format was 178 average in a company tournament. The LT-51 is from those times when I was younger and stronger.

Today, since I cannot seem duplicate my skills from the past, I spend more time analyzing my game, different release styles, ball speed, approach speed, backswing height, etc. This is in the hope of finding the right style of play for myself. Whatever I learn, I am willing to share with fellow bowlers.

So, every now and then, I make comments where I think I can help. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Cheers !

To Dabes -

Sorry, I did not invent the RG/RG Differential/Skid issue. I did read it from an internet article by Larry Mathews from Bowlers Journal. If you want, I can give you the URL. It is an entire article meant to guide a bowler regarding what to watch out for before buying/drilling a ball. Mathews did say that the ball surface type and its preparation/finish does determine 75%to 80% of its effective performance.

As for changing ball speed via approach and backswing variations, I would think that some people are capable of these adjustments. For example, twenty years ago, I used long fast steps and a low backswing on a five step approach. Today, I seem to have migrated to short, slow steps and a high backswing. I am still trying to find out why and would like to try it the old way. I will let you know what happens.

To all readers -

Read all about what to watch out for on the internet regarding choosing bowling balls. It is an article by Larry Matthews, who is probably a pro bowler. You will be surprised at how many variables should be considered when selecting/buying/drilling a ball. The website address is:

larry matthews is a noted ball driller and coach and not a pro bowler at this time. but he does have some interesting insights on factors to be considered when selecting a ball for certian situations.
