how many of you have a strength training regimen to help withstand the rigors of qualifying, matchplay and if you are lucky...TV finals. does it work for you? you don´t have to look like arnold to bowl. but it does help to tone parts of your body to help with your game.

well it seems like nobody is in shape when it´s time to compete and endure those qualifying and matchplay rigors.

does your body start aching the next day? you young ones might think you might not need to add it right now. wait
til you get injured or perhaps get older.
you must be among the " if it isn´t broken, don´t fix it" crowd.

my body aches when i think of bowling. i got injuries and i don´t play as often as i used to. i´m 35. i started when i was 13. i use a 16 lb ball. you can just imagine the wear and tear on my hand, back and knee with all that bowling. but bowling is a mental game.... so i guess i can get away it til i grow tired of bowling.

dabes,
have you even thought about dropping to a 15 lb ball? plus you can see the reason why strength training is needed.
also, a stretching routine is necessary for you before competition.
i´m 43 and i have benefitted from a strength training regimen after friends have told me to try it. but i also play tennis as well. i can run and gun with the big boys.
my first coach, PBA and ABC hall of famer ernie schelegel is a strong believer in strength training. he´s 62 now and still competes on tour when he can. they did not call him the IRON MAN of the PBA for nothing.

blackcloud,

re 15 lbs, nope. i prefer 16 lbs. 15 lbs is kinda light for me.

tennis and bowling dont mix well. your muscle memory is going to get confused especially with the follow thru.

the last person who trained me was tim mack. i am not sure if you know him. maybe he´s not in the league of the ppl you mention. what i know is he taught me how to hook the ball more and then some.

yes i do know the mack daddy great bowler. he´s in rehab right now trying to get his shoulder strength back. he won´t be back out bowling competitively for the next couple of months.
as your body wears down with age, it´s a must to work out if you plan to continue competing. nothing heavy duty but enough to where parts of your body like your back, legs and knees as well as your throwing arm can withstand the rigors of a tournament qualifying and matchplay. steroids will help but i don´t recommend it. not worth it
you think golf and bowling don´t work together as well? lot of bowlers i know play golf. and yes luck does help.
