Eric Tseng wins the 10th Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge

Hong Kong national bowler Eric Tseng won the 10th Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge at Pearl Bowling Center, on the second floor of HP Pearl Sports Center inside Harrison Plaza.

The organizer of this event would like to thank its title sponsors, Euro-Med Laboratories and Storm Products Incorporated. They would also like to thank Bevida distilled drinking water, Roto Grip, Premiere Insurance and Surety Corporation, EGI,ASI, AZO, Coca Cola products, Sports Digest, Manila Prime Holdings, Heritage Hotel, Manila Bulletin, Bowlmart Training Institute, and Pearl Bowling Center.

Eric defeated Australia’s Sam Cooley in the title match 214-202 to win the championship trophy and a million pesos.

The battle for the top eight spots was fast and furious as it took an average  of 238 to make it to round three of the finals. The 16 year old Malaysian rolled one of the three perfect game in the round two of the finals and averaged 248.75 to lead the round as he did yesterday to lead round one of the finals. Philippine national team member, Benshir Layoso, led most of the way with his 1982 series until the last game where Rafiq Ismail took the pole position. Another Filipino, Enzo Hernandez, finished in third just five pin short of his team mate. Hong Kong’s Eric Tseng  rolled a 1958 series to finish fourth ahead of Singaporean Vincent Lim who shot a 1945 series. Singapore-SBF’s Javier Tan rolled a 248 to jump into the sixth place with his 1929 series. Australia’s Sam Cooley is in seventh position with his 1917 series and fan favorite Tim Mack, PBA-Storm, rolled a big 249 to move him up to the eighth spot with his 1904 series. The top 8 bowlers moved into a match play where they will bowl another eight games with bonus points.

Advancing to the step ladder finals after a few tense moments are Hong Kong’s  Eric Tseng with a 248.5 average. Earlier leader Sam Cooley, from Australia, stayed in second position with a 2006 series after Eric passed him on the 7th game. Javier Tan of Singapore moved up two spots to third on the 7th game and stayed there with his 1922 series. American pro Tim Mack again moved up to the final spot of the step ladder final on his final game. Storm’s “Mack Attack” rolled a 198 after starting with a split in the first frame and another in the 11th, but good enough to finish with an 1880 series to move ahead of Malaysian Rafiq Ismail.

In the first match of the step ladder Tim started with a strike, a spare then three bagger before coming up high with a split. Javier started with a strike, two spares before doubling. Tan then spared and struck in the seventh. After six frames both bowlers were even at 126. Tim then doubled but Javier answered with a double of his own to stretch his string of strikes to three. Tim came in with a light hit to strike in the ninth frame before leaving a pin 10 in the tenth frame. With a spare and a nine count Mack finished with a 224 game. Javier dropped the shot and left the pin 8 and spared before striking for a 225 and winning the match. Javier Tan advances to the second match to meet Sam Cooley.

The second match started with Javier rolling a strike, while Sam started with two spares. The Singaporean then rolled another strike before leaving a baby split, which he missed. The Aussie then rolled a double. Javier answered with a double of his own. Cooley came up heavy and left pins 6 and 10, which he converted before striking again. Tan then left a weak 7, which he easily converted then struck again. after five frames Cooley led 107-105. He then struck in the 7th for a double unfortunately a stubborn pin 10 stood in the 8th frame which Sam calmly spared. Just like Sam, Javier struck in the 8th for a double but left a pin 7 which he converted. Cooley got up in the 10th struck in the first ball but left the 3-6-10 which he spared for a 223 game. Tan needed to srike out but came up high and left the 6 pin. Sam Cooley defeated Javier Tan 223-212 and advances to meet Eric Tseng.

The final match started with a strike from top qualifier Eric Tseng, on Sam’s first shot he came in a little light and left pin 4 and 8. His next shot  was high as he left  the 3-6-10 which he converted. Eric also came up light on the right lane and chopped the 2-5 off the 4 pin, but he came bck and struck. Cooley struck on the third frame and spared the pin 10. Tseng struck on the fourth but a stubborn pin 10, which he easily spared left the match virtually in a tie. A messenger gave the Aussie a strike in the fifth which he extended to a double. Eric matched Sam to keep the match even. Cooley extended his string to a turkey before leaving the 2-10 split, which he converted to the delight of the crowd. Mild mannered Tseng got up and struck before missing pin 10 in the 9th frame as the crowd was shocked. Unfortunately Sam left the 2-10 split again, this time on the right lane but only took out the 2 pin. Cooley down 2 in the ninth struck in the 10th frame but left pin 10 for a 202 score. Needing just a mark and eight count, Eric struck out for a 214-202 win.
